Mr. Ettore A. Januzzi

*Mr. Januzzi's full obituary and service information will appear in the Morning Journal and Chronicle Telegram on Friday, July, 20, 2012*

Ettore Anselmo Ette Januzzi, born January 15, 1928, in Lorain, Ohio, died July 15, 2012, from complications related to Parkinsons Disease. Ettore was the son of Italian immigrants, Stella (nee Mazza), and Enrico Januzzi, now deceased.  He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Vincenza Jean Januzzi (nee Guiliani).

Father of Laura Januzzi of Florida, Paul (Kim) Januzzi of North Ridgeville, Annette Januzzi Wick ( Mark Manley) of Cincinnati, Beth Januzzi Underhill (David) of Cincinnati, and Jeanne Januzzi of Amherst. Grandfather to Zachary Sroka, David and Drew Januzzi, Davis Wick, Cheryl, Shannon and Kaitlyn Manley, Gia Underhill, and Sophia Murphy. He is also survived by various nieces and nephews.

Ettore was preceded in death by his son David Ettore, his parents, brother Albert Januzzi, and son-in-law Devin Wick.

Ettores youth began working summers picking fruit at the old Speigelberg Farms and cutting grass for the neighbors. He was a graduate of Lorain High School, class of 1945, playing the base drum in the marching band.  As a young man, he loved to hunt small game during Thanksgivings with his father and Uncle Mike.

Ettore served in the Army, and was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, from 1951-53. He then returned home to help his parents, who had begun a shoe repair business which eventually became the well-known Januzzis Shoes. Named one of Lorain Countys Most Eligible Bachelors, he began courting and married Jean in 1961.  Ettore continued to support the operation of Januzzis Shoes, becoming co-owner with his brother Albert, until 1984.

Following the closure of Januzzis Shoes, he secured a real estate license, sold real estate and was active in estate sales.  Ettore was named to the board of Lorain County Metropolitan Housing Authority, and elected chairman, which he served in that position for twenty-five years, until his recent move to Cincinnati.

Ettore was a passionate gardener, known for his tomatoes, as well as an avid stamp collector.  He enjoyed model trains which he displayed in the basement, and conducted to the delight of his four then-young grandsons.

Family was most important to Ettore, coming from a small family.  He took great pains to encourage togetherness.  He had a love of history, and had it not been for the family shoe business, he would have pursued teaching history.  This love spilled over into the many historical vacations the family took when his children were younger, including the famous 1976 tour of Boston, D.C. and Gettysburg.

He loved the home he and Jean built together in Amherst, and acquaintances would agree that he had a perfectly manicured lawn, though he was saddened to sell the home, knowing their health was in decline.

Ettore was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church in Amherst, Ohio, volunteering for fish frys, soup dinners, and cemetery care. He and Jean were longtime patrons of and loved to frequent IAV spaghetti dinners, Lorains International Festival, and the annual Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy.  He was also a member of the former 14th St. Pool Hall gang.

A frequent traveler, he visited Italy with his father, and also Hawaii, Baltimore, Seattle, Oregon, San Francisco. Parents and siblings traveled to Italy seven years ago, and the highlight was standing before the same hotel he and his father stayed at forty years prior.

When asked his greatest accomplishment, Ettore responded, There are too many pick one. When asked what advice he would give to his grandchildren, he simply answered, Love.

Our father was a man of quiet action.  His many accomplishments and deeds as husband, father, and community member often went unheralded, but he loved to tell stories of his youth in hopes that we would retain them.  He was a man of doing right.  And as much as he loved our mothers cooking, he loved Italian sausage and donuts too.

Most recently, Ettore and his wife had located to Cincinnati, Ohio.

The family will receive friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst, OH on Sunday, July 22, 2012 from 3:00 until closing prayers at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, July 23, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church (meet at church), Rev. Lawrence N. Martello, Pastor, officiating and Rev. Thomas L. Weber, con-celebrant. Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where military honors will be performed by the U.S. Army. Memorial donations may be made to charity of choice or to any Parkinsons Disease Foundation.  Online condolences may be sent using www.rsgfuneralhome.com. Arrangements and services by Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, Lorain (440) 244-1961.
