Mrs. Margaret T. McDermott

Margaret  "Maggie" McDermott (nee Mackin), 100, passed away peacefully at Avon OaksNursing Home on Wednesday, July 3rd, surrounded by family and friends.

Margaret was born on July 18, 1912 in Cloughbrack, County Galway, Ireland to Patrick and Bridget Mackin. She was the youngest daughter in the family of four sisters and eight brothers.  She came to the United States at the age of 26 to join many of her family already here in Ohio.

Margaret's family in Ireland lived on a farm in a rural part of County Galway and she had many experiences helping with the chores as well as fishing with her father and cutting the "turf". She passed along her love of the "old country" to family through her many stories. One of her favorite pastimes was sneaking out with her brothers to attend the local dances. Any Irish music would get her feet moving even at 100 years old.

Margaret's love of dancing led to meeting her husband, Joseph Albert McDermott, at a dance at the Westside Irish American Club.  They were married in 1942.

Margaret worked at Lorain St. Joseph's Hospital as a Nurse's Aide and then in Central Supply for 36 years. She loved gardening, knitting and watching her television shows.

The most important thing to Margaret was her family.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 1962, her sons, John "Jack" and Leonard Thomas, and her mother, father and her eight brothers and four sisters.

Margaret is survived by her son, Michael (Patricia), daughters, Mary Nowicki (Robert),  Jean Berens (Jerry) and daughter-in-law, Mary Kay McDermott (Jack), 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.

The family would like to thank the staff at Avon Oaks Porter Pavilion for their care and concern during Margaret's stay.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 2 to 7 PM and on Monday, July 8, 2013 at St. Mary Church, 310 8th Street, Lorain, OH 44052 from 9:15 AM until the time of the Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Church, Fr. Daniel O. Divis, Pastor, officiating. Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Mary's Food Pantry, Avon Oaks Nursing Home Porter Pavilion or Wesleyan Village Adult Day Care Program. Online condolences may be sent using www.rsgfuneralhome.com.
