Mr. John J. Volak

John J. Volak, 91 years old of Amherst died peacefully at home, on April 22, 2015. He was born Sept.4, 1923 in Lorain and resided in Amherst for the last 53 years.

He was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Army for 3 years with Battery B 572ND Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. John was a Sergeant fighting in France, Germany and Belgium under the direction of General Patton at the Bulge. His group was known as the "Mystery Division". Medals include the American Theater Ribbon, EuropeanTheater Ribbon W/2 bronze stars, and World War II Victory MedalMeritorious Unit Award.

When he returned to Lorain, he married Rose (nee: DeChiaro), had 2 children and was married for 63 years. John was a carpenter with the L.A. Burgett Co. in Lorain for 16 years before starting his own business known as the John J. Volak Construction Co. He did building and remodeling for many years in Lorain County and retired in 1978 at 55 years old. He continued his love for the trade by volunteering his help to anyone who needed it. During his retirement, John was honored to be asked to be an Independent Construction Consultant for the building of the Humanities/Fine Arts Center at Lorain County Community College. John also was a co-owner of the former "SnoopeShop" at the Sheffield Center, and the Dombrowski-Wohlever-Volak Funeral Home in Lorain.

John was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, he enjoyed bowling in the Senior League at Rebmans, fishing, and in his younger years, hunting. After he retired, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Rose. He was also a devout father and grandfather. He was a lifetime member of the Amvets Post # 47 and St. Joseph Church, Amherst.

He was preceded in death by his loving, wife Rose in 2009; parents, Michael and Mary (nee: Jakubowski) Volak; brothers, Albert, Mike, Edward and Donald; sisters, Rose Plecity, Frances Frankiewicz and Josephine Cartmill. 

Survivors include son, John A. (Jamie) Volak of Lorain; daughter, Carol (George) Kussai of Oberlin; granddaughter, Nicole (Mike) Akosi of Huntersville, N.C.; grandson, Michael Volak of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Sunday, April 26, 2015 from 2:00 - 5:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 27, 2015 at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, 418 West 15th Street, Lorain, Fr. Robert J. Glepko, Pastor, officiating (meet at Church). Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where military honors will be performed by the Disabled American Veterans, Lois Proy Chapter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to any Veterans association in Lorain County or to Mercy New Life Hospice, 3500 Kolbe Rd., Lorain, OH 44053.
