Mr. Alex Shlapack

Vermilion- Alex Shlapack, 90, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2013, at Kingston Residence of Vermilion.

Alex was born in Marianna, PA on April 2, 1922, to his loving parents, Andy and Mary (nee: Sabo) Shlapack.

As a child, he moved with his family to Lorain, where he was raised. He graduated from Lorain High School, Class of 1940-B. In World War II, Alex was a Tech Sergeant with the Army's 29th Infantry Division, landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was in the American drive all the way across France. He stepped on a land mine in Germany and lost a leg. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. It was at an Army hospital that he met nurse, Ila Ruth Dodson, who, on May 31, 1945, became his wife. They were married 51 years before she passed away in 1996.

Alex was a third vesselman at Lorain's National Tube prior to World War II. After the war he returned to National Tube (later US Steel) and first worked on cranes and then as a clerk in the Bessemer and BOP, retiring after 43 years.

He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl (Jimmy) Repko of Amherst, Ohio and Denise (Harry Ong) Zyndorf of Lake Worth, Florida; sister, Olga Hambly of Vermilion, Ohio; and brothers, William (Joanne) Shlapack of Sheffield Lake, Ohio and Robert (Donna) Shlapak of Colorado; granddaughter, Melinda Repko of Canal Winchester, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

 He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila Ruth Shlapack; brothers, Andrew Shlapak and Michael Shlapack; and his parents, Andy and Mary Shlapack.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 3:00 - 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 5, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial services will be held at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Twp., where military honors will be performed by the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter No. 20.
