Mrs. Maria Esther Melendez

Lorain- Maria E. Melendez, 80, passed away suddenly on Friday, August 17, 2012 at University Hospital in Cleveland, OH

She was born on June 5, 1932 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico to her loving parents, Benito and Ana (nee: Andujar) Vasquez and moved to Lorain in 1948. She was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel and was employed at Maria Gardens for 13 years and retired in 2002. She enjoyed gardening, bingo, crocheting, casino trips and family gatherings.

She is survived by her children, Rosa Maria Nieves, Juan (Nellie) Nieves Jr., Jesus (Maria) Nieves, Luis Nunez, Nora Melendez (Thomas) Purdon, and Vilma �Vee� Melendez Dungan; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Juan Melendez; daughter, Carmen Nieves; and son, William Nunez.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Monday, August 20, 2012 from 4-8 PM. Closing prayers will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 9:50 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave., Lorain, Fr. John Retar, officiating. Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home.
