Lorain- Stanley Kowalski, 91, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at his home in Lorain, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on February 10, 1924 in Lorain, OH where he was a lifelong resident. Stan attended Lorain High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII. He served on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion and was honorably discharged in 1946. Stan returned home and married his beloved Bernadine (nee:Hilenski) on January 18, 1947 and they raised three children together. He worked at Broadway Lanes as a manager where he bowled several 300 games, AMF and Brunswick as an installer of bowling lanes, and he worked at the Shipyards as a welder. He was a member of St. Peter's Church, St. Peter's Senior Club, Lifetime member of United Polish Club, member of Polish Legion American Veterans, and a social member of the Italian American Veterans. He enjoyed bowling, going to lunches with his 1942 and 1943 classmates, watching the Cleveland Indians, traveling with his wife and family and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Bernadine; children, Noreen (Peter) Bitz, Tom (Karen) Kowalski and Marcy (Rod) MacKay; grandchildren, Kristine, Douglas, Mathew, Brian and Andrew; great grandchildren, Kellie, Keith, Madeline, Lukas, Zachary and Aiden; brother, Donald Kowalski; sister, Jeannette (Gordon) Swartz; and sister-in-law, Jeanne Kowalski.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Kowalski; and brothers, Gerald, Robert and Richard Kowalski;

Lorain- John H. "Jack" Blake, 93, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at The Abbewood Senior Living Community in Elyria, OH surrounded by his loving family.
Jack
was born in Lorain, OH on June 5, 1921 where he resided all of his life until
2004 when he moved to The Abbewood in Elyria with his wife.
He
graduated from Lorain High School. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in
the 44th Tank Battalion in the South Pacific during WWII, was
honorably discharged and was awarded the Purple Heart. He then married Sylvia
(nee: Petkovsek) in 1948 and they raised two children together, Daniel and
Linda. Jack retired from Thew Shovel Company as a machinist after many years of
service. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, the American Legion and
the VFW. Jack enjoyed dancing, gardening, swimming, polka music and most of
all, spending time with his family and friends.
He
is survived by his children, Daniel (Tracy) Blake of Lafayette, NJ and Linda
(Mick) Kuharik of Parma, OH; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, Sarah, John
and Evan.
He
was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sylvia M. Blake in 2005;
parents, Roy and Gussie (nee: Walker) Blake; and sister, Virginia (Andrew)
Pittak.
Jack's
family would like to recognize the care and love from the staff and residents
at the Abbewood which made Dad's last years enjoyable. The family would also
like to thank the VNA Hospice Group for the special care they provided toward
the end of his life.

Lorain- Frances A. (nee: Cieslak) Stanley, 78, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2015 at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH.
She was born on December 3, 1936 in Blawnox, PA and moved to Lorain as a young child, graduating from Lorain High School, Class of 1954. Following graduation she worked at Sun Finance Co. where she met her husband, Thomas and they married in 1958. Fran and her husband, Thomas started Lorain County Fence and later Stanley Fence where she was office manager until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua in Lorain and Fran enjoyed traveling, sight-seeing and she loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Jaqui Stanley, Christine Stanley and Sue (Jeff) Deering; brothers, John (Joann) Cieslak, Edward (Mary Ann) Cieslak and Richard (Denise) Cieslak; granddaughters, Fallon Farkas and Ashley Carter; great-granddaughter, Addalynn Carter; and beloved best friend, Norma Crnco.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas W. Stanley in 2006; parents, Marion and Antoinette (nee: Gandziarski) Cieslak.

John
J. Volak, 91 years old of Amherst died peacefully at home, on April 22, 2015. He
was born Sept.4, 1923 in Lorain and resided in Amherst for the last 53 years.
He
was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Army for 3 years with Battery
B 572ND Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. John
was a Sergeant fighting in France, Germany and Belgium under the direction of
General Patton at the Bulge. His group was known as the "Mystery Division". Medals
include the American Theater Ribbon, EuropeanTheater Ribbon W/2 bronze stars,
and World War II Victory MedalMeritorious Unit Award.
When
he returned to Lorain, he married Rose (nee: DeChiaro), had 2 children and was
married for 63 years. John was a carpenter with the L.A. Burgett Co. in Lorain
for 16 years before starting his own business known as the John J. Volak
Construction Co. He did building and remodeling for many years in Lorain County
and retired in 1978 at 55 years old. He continued his love for the trade by
volunteering his help to anyone who needed it. During his retirement, John was
honored to be asked to be an Independent Construction Consultant for the
building of the Humanities/Fine Arts Center at Lorain County Community College.
John also was a co-owner of the former "SnoopeShop" at the Sheffield Center,
and the Dombrowski-Wohlever-Volak Funeral Home in Lorain.
John
was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, he enjoyed bowling in the Senior
League at Rebmans, fishing, and in his younger years, hunting.
After he retired, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Rose. He was also a devout
father and grandfather. He was a lifetime member of the Amvets Post # 47 and
St. Joseph Church, Amherst.
He
was preceded in death by his loving, wife Rose in 2009; parents, Michael and
Mary (nee: Jakubowski) Volak; brothers, Albert, Mike, Edward and Donald; sisters,
Rose Plecity, Frances Frankiewicz and Josephine Cartmill.
Survivors
include son, John A. (Jamie) Volak of Lorain; daughter, Carol (George) Kussai
of Oberlin; granddaughter, Nicole (Mike) Akosi of Huntersville, N.C.; grandson,
Michael Volak of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Lorain- John F. Sklarek Sr., 76, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain, OH after a lengthy illness.
He was born on October 10, 1938 in Lorain, OH. John graduated from Lorain High School and on August 27, 1960 he married his beloved Patricia "Patsy" (nee: Beko) and they raised three sons together. He entered into the United States Army in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1963. He was the founder and owner of J&J Door in Huron, OH for 25 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of St. Peter's Church in Lorain. He loved fishing, shooting his guns, woodworking and going to Zeller's Beach in Marblehead, OH where he was known as "the mayor of Zeller's Beach".
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years of marriage, Patricia A. Sklarek; sons, John F. (Christine) Sklarek Jr., Michael J. (Kathy) Sklarek and Mark J. (Christine) Sklarek; sister, Jean (Don) Warner; brother, Louis (Arlene) Sklarek; grandchildren, Jessica and Nicholas: Anthony (Lindsay), Adam and Matthew: and Amanda; great grandchildren, Hailey and Zoey; and loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Lottie Sklarek; sisters, Tessie (Dick) Turton and Fran (Don) Nawicki; brother, and Joe Sklarek.

Lorain- Sam J. Catanzarite, 91, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain, OH.
He was born on December 18, 1923 in Lorain where he was a life-long resident.
Sam attended Lorain City Schools, after which he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1941 and served six months in Leeds, Utah. He enlisted in the United States Navy in January 1944 where he was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station for basic training. Sam was schooled in contact mine assembly and was stationed in Hawaii, attaining the rank of Mineman Second Class. After serving his country, Sam was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked at American Ship and Thew Shovel as a burner welder. He also worked for Lorain County as a clerk.
Sam is a life-long member of the Church of St. Peter in Lorain. He was an original charter member and also an honorary life member of the Italian American Veterans Post 1, and a regular member of the VFW in Elyria. He was an avid bowler and golfer experiencing the joy of a hole in one at Thunderbird Golf Course in Huron. Sam enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing cards. He took great pride in the upkeep of his home, lawn, and landscape.
He is survived by his brothers, Joe (Ellen) Catanzarite, Julius (Marge) Catanzarite and Fred (Janice) Catanzarite; sisters, Catherine "Cutty" Catanzarite, Antoinette Feldkamp and Rose Bardar; brother-in-law, Charles Short; sixteen nieces and nephews; and good friend, Marie Bonaminio.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (nee: Lewis) Catanzarite in 1994; parents, Fred and Rosa (nee: Gallo) Catanzarite; sister, Mary Ann Szabo; and brother, Dominic Catanzarite.
The family would like to thank the staff at Anchor Lodge Assisted Living Unit and New Life Hospice for the excellent care given to our brother in his time of need.

Lorain- Edmond M. Kattas, 90, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at MetroHealth in Cleveland, OH.
Edmond was born on August 10, 1924 in Lorain, OH. He married Evelyn M. (nee: Gavigan) on September 18, 1955, and they raised three daughters together.
He graduated from Lorain High School, Class of 1942 and following graduation he was a mailman for the United States Post Office for forty years. Edmond was a member of the Church of the Redeemer and a social member of the IAV. He enjoyed bowling and league play at Rebman's, watching all sports, gardening at his home, casino games and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathy Kattas of Lorain, Nancy Ciccarelli of Lorain, and Sandy Jacovetti of North Olmsted; and grandchildren, Daniel Szabo, Kristen Jacovetti, Stacey Jacovetti, and Sarah Lash; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Evelyn M. Kattas on August 19, 2014; parents, Samuel and Barbara Kattas; and brother, Emil Kattas.

NELSONVILLE - Dennis P. Profant, 58, of Nelsonville, Ohio, formerly of Lorain, Ohio, died April 15, 2015, at his residence.
He
was born Oct. 30, 1956, in Lorain and graduated from Lorain High School in
1974. He earned an associate degree from Hocking College, a bachelor's from the
University of Florida and a master's degree from Central Michigan University.
Dennis, an entomologist, was a respected professor for more than 25 years at
Hocking College in Nelsonville, teaching field biology as well as courses on
ornithology, botany and other disciplines.
His love for insects and nature was evident at an early age, when Dennis began
collecting caterpillars so he could watch them turn into butterflies. While
attending Hocking College, he was a counselor at the Youth Conservation Corps
during summer breaks. After college, he worked for the Ohio Department of
Natural Resources and then as a park ranger in Florida, working with endangered
manatees in Orange City.
After becoming a professor at Hocking, he published extensively, including
researching and writing a textbook about trees for college students, and
blogging about field biology. Dennis, who won a teacher of the year award, was
highly rated by his students. During summer breaks he conducted research at
Beaver Island in Michigan. His collection of moths and butterflies is extensive
and spans 30 years.
In his spare time, Dennis was a player and manager on the Hocking softball
team. He collected celebrity autographs and baseball cards, and enjoyed movies.
Dennis was also a jazz aficionado; he played trumpet and ran an Internet radio
station featuring soft jazz and fusion music, and his record collection
included hundreds of albums.
Dennis always made people laugh and was a loving person who will be dearly
missed by all. Survivors include his parents, John and Elizabeth Profant (nee
Miraldi); brother John M. (Sandra) Profant; sister Kim Profant; nephew Jason
Profant; partner Barbara Reece; aunts Mary Miraldi, Annette Segalavich and Becky
Profant; uncle Val Miraldi; and loving cousins. He was preceded in death by his
uncles, Allan Profant and Tony Segalavich; and both sets of grandparents.
