Mr. John H. "Jack" Blake

Lorain- John H. "Jack" Blake, 93, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at The Abbewood Senior Living Community in Elyria, OH surrounded by his loving family.

Jack was born in Lorain, OH on June 5, 1921 where he resided all of his life until 2004 when he moved to The Abbewood in Elyria with his wife.

He graduated from Lorain High School. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the 44th Tank Battalion in the South Pacific during WWII, was honorably discharged and was awarded the Purple Heart. He then married Sylvia (nee: Petkovsek) in 1948 and they raised two children together, Daniel and Linda. Jack retired from Thew Shovel Company as a machinist after many years of service. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, the American Legion and the VFW. Jack enjoyed dancing, gardening, swimming, polka music and most of all, spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Daniel (Tracy) Blake of Lafayette, NJ and Linda (Mick) Kuharik of Parma, OH; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, Sarah, John and Evan.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sylvia M. Blake in 2005; parents, Roy and Gussie (nee: Walker) Blake; and sister, Virginia (Andrew) Pittak.

Jack's family would like to recognize the care and love from the staff and residents at the Abbewood which made Dad's last years enjoyable. The family would also like to thank the VNA Hospice Group for the special care they provided toward the end of his life.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 3:00 - 7:00 PM. Closing prayers will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 10:20 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, May 4, 2015 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 41295 N. Ridge Rd., Elyria, Fr. Donald H. Dunson, Pastor, officiating. Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain, OH where military honors will be performed by the Amherst Military Honor Guard. Memorial donations may be made in Jack's name to VNA Hospice, 2500 E. 22nd Street, Cleveland, OH 44115. Online condolences may be sent using www.rsgfuneralhome.com.
