Mrs. Magdalene Dougherty

Lorain- Magdalene "Mal" Dougherty (nee: Sestili), 93, went home to her Lord and Savior on July 1, 2015. She passed away peacefully at the Main Street Care Center in Avon Lake, OH.

She was born on February 12, 1922 in Lorain, Ohio to Mary and Dominic Sestili. Mal was a life- long Lorain resident. She graduated from Lorain High School in the 1940-A class. She worked at Neisner's Dime Store and then during WWII she worked at The National Tube Co.

She met and married the love of her life, Joseph John Dougherty of Philadelphia, PA on October 1, 1949 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Lorain. She dedicated her life to raising her nine children and imparting the love of God in all she did. Her faith in God and strong devotion to his holy mother, Mary, guided her every day.

She was an avid reader, excellent seamstress, loved to crochet and enjoyed crossword puzzles. She was known for her poetic ability for any occasion encouraging people spiritually through her poems. She loved caring for her 22 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was truly blessed!

Mal was active in the Legion of Mary at St. John the Baptist Church and the Marian Guild at St. Anthony of Padua and the Cursillo Movement.

 Mal is survived by her nine children, Joseph (Belinda) Dougherty, Mary Alice (Dr. Stephen) Evans, Margaret (Harold) Corriveau, James (Kirsten) Dougherty, Dominic (Lori) Dougherty, Helen Conley, Bernadette (Perry) Bascone, Magdalene (James) Chrulski, and Dorothy (John) Gerber; a sister, Sylvia Sestili; brother-in-law, Ben Johns; 25 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and 8 step-great great grandchildren.

Mal was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Dougherty; parents, Dominic and Mary (nee: Mattei) Sestili; brothers, Paul Sestili, Michael Poli; sisters, Loretta Pompei, Helen Katrinchak, Rose Marotta, Theresa Johns, and Elvira Hodovan; son-in-law, Gary Conley; and granddaughter, Christine Hope Conley.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain, OH (440) 244-1961 on Sunday, July 5, 2015 from 2:00 - 6:00 PM. Closing prayers will be at the funeral home on Monday at 10:20 AM. Mr. John J. Motto

Lorain- John J. Motto, 86, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Autumn Aegis in Lorain, OH.

He was born on July 15, 1928 in Lorain, OH where he was a lifelong resident.

John graduated from Lorain High School, Class of 1946-B. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea, during the Korean War and he served as an Army cook. He was honorably discharged in 1953 after two years of service. Returning home, he worked at Fruehauf Trailer Co., he owned and operated Motto's Pizza and Spaghetti House, and in 1994 he retired from the Lorain City Health Department as an Inspector. John was a proud life member of St. Peter's Church where he served as an altar boy as a kid, helped design the Church kitchen in 1962 and ran spaghetti and calamari dinners for fundraisers. He was also a life member of the IAV Post #1 where he served on the Board of Directors, helped with fundraisers, active with the color guard and enjoyed playing cards. John was also a member of the All Nations, Sons of Italy, VFW 451, the Eagles, the Mooselodge, and Nativity Church Holy Name Society where he helped the Church run spaghetti dinner fundraisers.  

John enjoyed bowling, golfing, trips to Las Vegas and he loved to cook Italiano.  

He is survived by his devoted nephews, Anthony J. (Irene) Motto Jr. and Nicholas J. (Gail) Motto; nieces, Concetta M. Motto and Patricia L. Motto-Cromer; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lena (nee: Haught) Motto; parents, Nick and Concetta (nee: Rosso) Motto; and brother, Anthony J. (Louise) Motto Sr.

Lorain- Adonis Ronnell Smith, was delivered and entered into the Lord unexpectedly on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at University Hospitals of Elyria, OH surrounded by his loving family.

This little angel is survived by his loving mother, Heidi Pride; father, Darrell Ronnell Smith; nine sisters; five brothers; maternal grandparents, John and Rhonda (nee: Reising) Phillips; paternal grandparent, Gwendolyn Gallaway; maternal great grandparents, Virginia Phillips and Jason and Joy Hall.

Baby Boy is welcomed into the gates of paradise by many loving family members that have passed away before him.

Mr. Lester J. Bring

Lorain-Lester J. Bring, 89, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, OH.

He was born July 22, 1925 in Sheffield, OH and attended Brookside High School.  Mr. Bring enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII where he was a convoy driver in the "Red Ball Express" serving in France and Germany. Lester was honorably discharged in 1946. On September 13, 1947, he married his beloved Helen Y. (nee: Grasso). Lester worked for the Norfolk and Western Railroad for 49 years and was a member of St. Peter's Church in Lorain, OH. He loved his family and cherished spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Bring is survived by his son, Dale (Mona) Bring, Esq. of Gahanna, OH; grandchildren, Dean (Ashley) Bring, Esq. of Upper Arlington, OH and Dr. Benjamin (Miranda) Bring of Upper Arlington, OH; and great grandchildren, Blaine Nathaniel Bring and Milena Noelle Bring.

Special friends include Mike and Pat McDermott of Amherst, Ohio and a special thanks to the kind and caring sisters at St. Therese Villas in Columbus, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years of marriage, Helen Y. Bring; and his parents, Edward and Christine (nee: Alten) Bring.

Mrs. Ellen Kapanke

Lorain- Ellen M. (nee: McConnell) Kapanke, 57, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on May 13, 1958 in Lorain, Ohio were she was a lifelong resident. Ellen graduated from Lorain Catholic High School, Class of 1976. Following graduation, she worked as a dental assistant for many years with the offices of Dr. Thomas Timko and later with Dr. Richard Marcucci. She was a proud member of St. Mary Church where she enjoyed serving as a Eucharistic Minister, Altar Server and volunteering at St. Mary's Food Pantry.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 15 years, Keith Kapanke; mother, Mary Jane (nee: Busch) McConnell; children, Alec (Jessica) McConnell, Renee Kapanke, Julie Kapanke and Halle Kapanke; siblings, Daniel (Ruthann) McConnell, Michael (Cheryl) McConnell, John McConnell, James (Ann) McConnell, Rosemary (Charlie) Albright, Judith (Paul-deceased) Zacharias, Kathleen McConnell and Frances McConnell; sister-in-law, Laurene (William-deceased) Cyran; brother-in-law, Daniel Bing; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mark H. Stanley

Sheffield Village - Mark H. Stanley, 55, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on May 21, 1960 in Lorain, OH. He graduated from Brookside High School, Class of 1978. Mark later enlisted in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees unit and was honorably discharged. He returned home and worked in construction, retiring from Specialized Construction in 2012. Mark was a member of the Amvets Post #55 and he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, riding his Harley, playing the drums with local bands and he was passionate about sports. He loved spending time with friends, family and most of all his boys, Cole and Luke.

He is survived by his loving sons, Cole and Luke Stanley; mother, Nancy Stanley; sister, Hallie (Roberto Medina Iscar) Stanley; niece, Megan Durasin; brothers of the heart, Lloyd Canterbury and Eric Holley; and cousins, aunts, uncle and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Stanley.

Mrs. Stella F. Majka

Lorain- Stella F. (nee: Dobrowski) Majka, 88, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015 at Amherst Manor surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Elyria, OH on April 26, 1927 and attended Elyria High School.

Following High School, she worked at her family grocery store in Elyria, Dobrowski Meats as a cashier and order taker and she also worked for her brother, Dr. Stanley as a receptionist in Cleveland. On April 20, 1963, she married her loving Ted Majka. Stella loved being a homemaker, sweeping and up-keeping her home, pressing clothes, caring for her flowers in her yard and raising her children. She enjoyed traveling to different polka venues with her husband, Ted in Cleveland and Western PA where they danced and listened to polka music. She was a member of Nativity B.V.M. Parish and St. Peter's Church in Lorain.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ted Majka; sons, Robert, John and Ted (Donna Herron) Majka; sisters, Pauline Cyran, Mary Rybarcyk, Verna Sabo, Joanne (Tom) Bedoc and Ann Byczinski; sister-in-law, Marie Dobrowski; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Josephine (nee: Kruszewski) Dobrowski; sisters, Sophie Golski and Theresa Dyczkowski; and brothers, Ernest "Ernie", Dr. Stanley and Joseph Dobrowski.

Mr. Albert G. Poprock

Lorain- Albert "Butch" Poprock, 87, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home in Lorain, OH.

He was born on April 26, 1928 in Lorain, OH where he was a lifelong resident. Butch attended Lorain High School before entering into the U.S. Army during WWII and was later honorably discharged. He returned home and worked at U.S. Steel as an electrician. Butch was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and PLAV in Lorain. He enjoyed golfing and trips to Las Vegas.

Butch is survived by his daughter, Lynette (Anthony) Rutkowski; brother, Edward (Mary) Poprock; grandchildren, Philip (Kristen) Rutkowski and Pamela (Steven) Tremaine; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Sophie Poprock; brothers, Theodore (Frances), Donald (Nina), William (Helen) and John (Jackie) Poprock; and nephew, Scott Poprock.

Christian entombment services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Calvary Cemetery, 555 North Ridge Rd, Lorain, Fr. Craig M. Hovanec, officiating (meet at main entrance of cemetery). Rev. Fr. Kenneth Joseph Wolnowski

Fort Lauderdale- Father Kenneth J. Wolnowski, 76, formerly of Lorain and Cleveland, OH, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 18, 2015 at his home in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

He was a native of Cleveland and was born on November 7, 1938. Father Ken began his ministerial training at 14 years old at Borromeo Seminary. His training continued at the Theological College at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC and he finished his schooling at St. Mary's Seminary in Cleveland where he obtained a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained into the Cleveland Diocese as a Catholic Priest on May 22, 1965.

As a young priest he was a Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Avon Lake from '65-'71 and at St. Mary's Church in Elyria from '71-'72 while teaching religion at Lorain Catholic High School. Fr. Wolnowski was a faculty member at Elyria Catholic High School from '72-'74 and he served as Director at the Clergy Personnel Office from '74-'76. He was Pastor at St. Josaphat's Church in Cleveland from '76-'80 and served as a Secretary for Parish Life and Development from '80-'86. In '86 he was assigned as Pastor to the Church of St. Peter for 23 years until his retirement on June 28, 2009. Fr. Ken served as a Catholic Priest for fifty years and moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where he continued to help at various churches. He enjoyed warm, sunny climates and he loved traveling and spending quality time by the sea.

He was preceded in death by his father, Casimir J. Sr. in 1963 and his mother, Harriett (nee: Matuszewski) in 1999.

Father Ken is survived by his brother, Casimir J. Jr. (Georganne) Wolnowski; sister, Frances (Jerry) Yustick; nephew, Casimir J. Wolnowski III; and niece, Cyndi Yustick.  

Family and friends will gather on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the Church of St. Peter, (3655 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, OH 44053) for RECEPTION OF THE BODY AND VESPERS at 3:00 PM with calling hours to continue until 8:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the Church of St. Peter, with Most Reverend Bishop Roger Gries, O.S.B., Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus as primary celebrant. Christian burial services will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in Cuyahoga Heights, OH.
