 Lorain- Shirley Neri (nee: Miller), 84, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2010 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home in Lorain.

 Shirley was born on August 19, 1925 in Wyandotte, MI. She grew up in Amherst and moved to Lorain as a young adult where she raised her family and lived for the rest of her life. Shirley graduated from Marion Steele High School in Amherst. She was a proud member of the Democratic Party and an advocate for social justice. She worked her entire life as a bar manager and homemaker. Shirley enjoyed cooking and reading and loved caring for her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also had a love and passion for pets.    

 She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Anthony Neri; daughters, Toni (Lionel) Lavoie,  Jody (Jeffrey) Novotny, Gina (John) Horinger and Briggitte Stubbs; son, Michael Neri; sisters, Sandra (Tom) Wilmer and Myrna Baltzell; grandchildren, Dana, Adam, Lisa, Michael, Danny, Brooke, Bryan, Erin and Brittney; and 13 great grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Hilda (nee: Powell) Miller; and granddaughter, Kimberly Neri.

Patricia Ruth (nee:Corrao) Strickler

 Lorain- Patricia Ruth Strickler, 72, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph in Lorain.

 She was born in Lorain, Ohio on October 1, 1937 by her parents, Angelo and Anna Corrao. Pat spent her entire life in Lorain. She was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church in Elyria. Pat graduated from St. Marys Academy, Class of 1955. She worked for a short time at Margies Hallmark Store in Lorain. Pat was a volunteer for grade school reading programs and was a former Girl Scout Leader.  She enjoyed baking, cake decorating, gardening, canning, boating, ceramics, animals and nature, feeding the birds and squirrels, watching the Cleveland Browns and she loved to travel. Pat will be remembered for her selfless, kind and gentle manner.

 She is survived by her husband, Richard Strickler, whom she married on September 29, 1956; daughter, Cindy Strickler of Lorain; granddaughter, Leanne Strickler of Chicago, IL; sister, Marie Edwards of Elyria; sister-in-law, Dena (nee:DeAngelis) Corrao; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 She is preceded in death by her parents, Angelo and Anna (nee: Mishak) Corrao; and her brother, Joseph Corrao.

 Lorain- Roger Lee DeBerry, 62, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010 at University Hospital, Cleveland.

 Roger was born in Cumberland, Maryland on February 22, 1948 by his parents, Junior and Kathleen (nee: Feather) DeBerry. He moved to Lorain in 1961. Roger enlisted in the United States Army during Vietnam. During his Tour of Vietnam he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, two Bronze Service Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device and an Army Commendation Medal. He was employed with Crown Steel in Lorain as an assembler for 43 years. Roger enjoyed cars, gardening and spending time with his family and friends.

 He is survived by his wife, Ruthie DeBerry; three daughters, Connie Ocasio of Lorain, Audrey Russell of Warsaw, Indiana and Karen Wright of Ocala, Florida; son, Randy DeBerry of Lorain; mother, Kathleen DeBerry; six grandchildren; two sisters, Sue Wyers and Carol Moyers; brother, Chuck DeBerry; and many nieces and nephews.

 He is preceded in death by his father, Junior DeBerry; brother, Dick DeBerry; and his grandmother, Rhuie DeBerry.

Lorain- Ann G. Hayward (nee: Giblin), 80, died on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph in Lorain.

Ann was born on December 11, 1929, in Youngstown, OH.

She graduated from Ursuline High School in 1948 and worked as a secretary at Youngstown Sheet and Tube.  Ann was married to her loving husband, Hugh B.  Hayward on April 28, 1956. She spent her days as a homemaker. Ann lived in Poland, OH until 1980, moving to Sarasota, FL. She moved to the Lorain area in 1991. Ann enjoyed reading, sewing and classical music. She volunteered with the Youngstown Symphony and at the gift shop at the former St. Joseph Hospital.
Ann was a member of St. Peter Church and the Womens Guild.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Hayward of Lorain, with whom she made her home; grandchildren, Sarah (Kevin) Gomez of Amherst and Stephen Zientarski of Lorain; and several nieces and nephews.  

She is preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Hugh B. Hayward, who died in 1991; her parents, Richard and Mary Giblin; sisters, Rita Young, Sara Darrow and Marilouise Giblin; and brothers, Richard and Joseph Giblin.

The family will receive friends at St. Peter Church, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain on Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 9:00 AM until 9:50 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM, on Thursday, at the church, Fr. Chuck Henkle, O.F.M. Conv., officiating.  A private burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown, OH.

William B. Kozusko, Jr.

 Vermilion- William B. Kozusko, Jr., 69, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Kingston of Vermilion.

 William was born on December 5, 1940, in Indiana, PA, to his parents William B. and Mary (nee: Pekala) Kozusko. He lived in Indiana, PA, until 1962, moving to Baltimore and later residing in Lorain since 1965.  He moved to Vermilion in 1999. He received his Bachelor degree from Indiana University of PA and his Masters degree from Kent State University. He was both a teacher and administrator for the Lorain city schools.  In addition, he taught classes at Cleveland State University.  Following retirement he became a home inspector. William attended the Church of St. Peter while residing in Lorain and the Church of St. Mary during his years in Vermilion.  He was a member of the Elks Club, the National Association of Home Inspectors, and various educational and vocational associations. He enjoyed golfing, skiing, and traveling with family and friends.  He had special memories of a family vacation to Maui with his children and grandchildren.

 He is survived by his wife Carole Ann (nee: Bishop) Kozusko; son, Douglas John (Delora) Kozusko of Lorain; daughter, Laurel Ann Lutz of Columbus; grandchildren, Branden, Casey, Matthew and Marisa Lutz; nephew Michael and wife Beth Black of Indiana, and their children Jillian and Ethan.  He was also blessed with extended family members on the Bishop side of the family.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, William B. Sr. and Mary Kozusko, sister Suzanne and niece Rosella.

Lorain- Celeste DeSantis, 88, passed away on May 7, 2010.

Born, Celeste Tamborino, on August 1, 1921 in Union City, New Jersey. Celeste met Angelo in New York during WWII and moved to Lorain after marrying. In addition to raising a family, Celeste was an avid artist, seamstress, keyboardist, and choir member at St. Peter Church. 

Survivors include sons, Robert (Nancy), Michael and Tom; granddaughter, Gina; and 14 nieces and nephews.

Celeste was preceded in death by her husband, Angelo; father, Angelo; mother, Ann; and sister, Ann.

 Sheffield Village- Elaine Missy (nee:Darmstadt) Kajganich, 85,  passed away May 4, 2010, 12:05 P.M., at University Hospital, Cleveland.

 She was born on September 14, 1924 on the west side of Cleveland and graduated from West Tech High School in 1942. Elaine moved with her family to Sheffield Village in July of 1960 and has resided there the remainder of her life.  She was an active member of United Church of Christ in Sheffield Lake and was also a lifetime member of Love-A-Stray Animal Rescue.  Elaine was completely dedicated to animal welfare. Her hobbies included bowling, walking in the park and taking care of her precious animals.

 Elaine is survived by her husband of 61 years, Steve; daughter, Bonnie (Dick) of Sheffield Village; son, Donald of Las Vegas, Nevada; and many nieces and nephews.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Darmstadt; sister, Mary Helen Gabrenya; and brothers, George, Ray and Charles.

Lorain- James Frances Tucker, age 79, passed away on Monday May 3rd under the care of New Life Hospice of St. Joseph in Lorain.

James was born and lived in Yorkville, Ohio until he joined the Marines at the age 15 and was released for being too young and then promptly joined the Army at 16.  While serving eight years in the Army as a Tank Sergeant, he received multiple decorations during WWII and the Korean War including the Korean Combat Medal.

After leaving the military in 1954, he worked 32 years as a crane operator at U.S. Steele in Lorain before retiring in 1988.  In 2002, he proudly received an Honorary High School Diploma from Admiral King at the age of 72.

He was an avid military supporter and veteran as well as an active member of the American Legion Post 30, Lorain.

James was proceeded in death by his parents, John and Myrtle Tucker; his sons, Rocky and Robby Tucker; daughter, Twila Tucker; as well as two grandchildren, Rusty L Tucker Jr. and John F. Tucker.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis Tucker; son, Ricky (Marilyn) Tucker; Randy Tucker; Rusty (Betty) Tucker; Rowdy (Janet) Tucker; daughters, Darlene (Ray Skip) Halliwell and Cheryl (Wendell) Moffette; 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Lorain- Rita M. Kelly, 84, passed away on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Community Health Partners, Lorain, following a brief illness.

Rita was born on June 17, 1925; she was the beloved mother of five children and the only surviving member of the Traxler family of 15.She was loved by all who knew her.Rita was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Marys Church, now called Mary Mother of God, and a lifetime member of theVeterans of Foreign Wars.

Ritas places of employment throughout her lifetime were Careys Villa, K-Mart Food, Krogers, Rini-Rego, and P. C. Campana.More importantly, she loved to gourmet and ethnic cook for friends and family.

Her amazing children are Constance L. Trelka, (Dennis), Donna A. Kramer (Daniel), Patricia K. Eastaugh (David), Mary E. Obbey (Kavin Mrosek), and James W. Stringfellow; Ritas loving grandchildren are Darin P. Trelka, Jessica L. Trelka, Daniel J. Kramer, Steven Kramer, Jennifer Duffield, Aimee Kusznir, Nichole Beale, and Clint Stringfellow; Mrs. Kellys terrific great grandchildren are Dennison Trelka, Bradley Kramer, Andrew Kramer, Taylor Kramer, Adam Kramer, Brittany Kramer, Katelynn, Kramer, Zachary Kramer, Joseph Kramer, Ryan Kramer, Jacob Kusznir, Allie Beale, Ethan Beale, Sarah Stringfellow.

Frances Louise (nee:Maslyk) Elbert, 96, of Elyria, peacefully passed to God, surrounded by loving family on Friday, April 16, 2010. Frances was a beloved mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born on August 14, 1913  in LaGrange, and spoke fluent Polish. Frances married her beloved husband, Lorne J. Elbert Sr. on November 28, 1935. She resided in Elyria most of her life and was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary Church, Elyria. Frances was a 48 year breast cancer survivor. Growing up, she loved music and was a self-taught piano player. Frances greatly adored nature, particularly birds. She enjoyed reading, knitting, cooking, baking and praying the rosary. Frances treasured spending time with her family. She was an active member of Legion of Mary, T.O.P.S. Club, Sweet Adeline, and St. Mary Altar and Rosary Society. 

 

Frances is survived by her six children, Lorne J. (Lorene) Elbert Jr. of Grafton, Earl J. (Bobbie) Elbert of FL, Nancy (Ken) Buescher, City Council Representative of North Ridgeville, Thomas J. Elbert of Grafton, Michael J. (Pam) Elbert of Grafton and MaryAnn (Jack) Giovannazzo of Elyria; sixteen grandchildren: Lisa Elbert Pulver, Louis, Patrick, Lorne III, Joseph, and Matthew Elbert, Christine Elbert Elanbassi, Julianne Buescher, Joseph Buescher, Andrew, Adam, and Michael Elbert, and Dominic, Frances Francee, Vincent and Lauren Giovannazzo.  Frances also cherished  twenty-four great- grandchildren. 

 

Frances is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years of marriage, Lorne J. Elbert Sr.in 1981; parents, Louis and Julianna (nee: Kozlowski) Maslyk; brother, Frank Maslyk; sisters, Helen Sadowski, Bernice Zola and Carey Faecking; and grand-daughter, Renee Elbert Laubenthal in 2009. 

 

Mrs. Elberts family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 from 4-8 pm at Bauer-Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Road, Elyria (at the corner of State Rt. 57 and Chestnut Ridge Rd.), (440) 322-4626.
