Mrs. Maria Harkacz

Maria Harkacz (Wintoniuk) 86, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2011, at Wesleyan Village following a brief illness. Born on January 21, 1925 in Kolomaya, Ukraine, she was taken from her homeland during World War II to work in Germany, where she met and married her husband, Peter, after the war. In 1950, they left for the United States and settled in Lorain where they raised a family. Maria was employed by Oneils and Hills department stores and after retirement, she and Peter moved to Brunswick, Ohio to be near their grandchildren.

Maria was active in the Ukrainian community. She belonged to St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Ukrainian National Womens League of America, and the Ukrainian National Home as a charter member.  Maria loved literature, both reading and writing, and frequently contributed poems and articles to Ukrainian publications.  The daughter of a tailor, she enjoyed traditional Ukrainian embroidery.  She created many rushnyki and Ukrainian dolls dressed in historical and regional costumes. Some of her work has been donated to the Ukrainian Museum-Archives in Tremont. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Ukraine where she met her extended family.

Marias greatest joy was her family. She will be deeply missed by husband, Peter of Wesleyan Village, daughter, Anne Petkosek (Arthur) of Amherst, son Myron (Mary) of Lorain, daughter Doris (Richard) Maynard of Seville, grandchildren Andrea (Michael) Reppa, Michael Petkosek, Marco Cuevas, David Harkacz, Eric Maynard, and great grandson Matthew Reppa. She was preceded in death by daughter Loretta in 1966, parents Dimitro and Olana Wintoniuk, and sister Anna Andrichuk of Ukraine.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 25, 2011 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 pm at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave. Lorain, Ohio.
